This is actually a great question. I haven't thought about using DataTables in this way.

I was trying to use the html5 data attributes, like in this example, to sort columns by the actual timestamp, rather than the formatted date.

I guess this might be the answer?

You can use my yadcf plugin for that too, use initMultipleColumns , it can aacpet text / select / 'multi_select' , you can combine it with the select2 / chosen for a better ui too, see it in action
